"Believe Memphis" Design Review

If you live in Memphis, chances are you've been seeing quite a bit of this the last few weeks:

It's everywhere – billboards, Growl towels, Twitter profile pictures (show your support by getting a Twibbon here) – every time you turn around, you are reminded that the Memphis Grizzlies are, in fact, in the playoffs!

Every team has cute little catchphrases and campaigns to rally their respective fanbases, and I figured the Grizzlies' playoff mantra: "Believe Memphis" would be just another forgettable marketing ploy. But after the Grizzlies won a couple of games, the phrase "believe Memphis" took on a whole new meaning. In a city with a history of disappointment with their NBA team, this year's rag-tag group of gritty grinders has the city hopeful for once.

Which leads me to why I love the design behind this campaign:
  • It uses the team's colors (consistency and easy association)
  • The grunge represents what this team is all about and their style of play
  • It evokes the idea of a grass roots, guerilla marketing blitz
  • The organization has used it very well, taking advantage of different mediums and using it consistently (color, layout) across all of them
So, go Grizzlies designers, but more importantly, go Grizz!

"Believe Memphis" is picking up steam again after their disappointing run last year. Warriors have made good on the belief of their fanbase, rekindling their glory from 2007. Memphis I trust will do the same this year. This time we're going deeper, dare I say all the way!
